Aggressive whitewater design will thrill experienced open boaters

Esquif Canoes has spent the better part of the last two decades pushing the sport of whitewater canoeing forward and they show no sign of letting up. At Paddlesports Retailer 2018's On-The-Water Demo Day Esquif showed off a brand new prototype model of the Excite.

The Excite is a bold and agressive new design from Esquif, based on Sabrina Barm's Extasy, which debuted last year. The Extasy (look for a review of the Extasy in the Fall 2018 issue of Paddling Magazine) was the first whitewater canoe designed by a women and designed for smaller paddlers. Barm is the first solo female canoeist to compete in the Green River Race and also competed in two Adidas Sickline Extreme Kayak World Championships, paddling C1 against a sea of kayakers.

While the Extasy hits a sweet spot for paddlers 110 to 150 pounds, the Excite is designed for paddlers 150 pounds and up, according to rep Eli Helbert.

“The Excite is a more aggressive boat than the L'Edge,” Helbert tells Paddling Magazine, as the two designs sit side-by-side on the shore of Oklahoma City's Riversport Adventure Park. “It feels a bit like you're getting squirted like a watermelon seed—it's fast.” There isn't much in the way of initial stability, Helbert adds, so it's best suited for experienced paddlers comfortable with their offside strokes.

In particular, the Extasy and Excite have found much popularity with slalom paddlers, garnering rave reviews, says Helbert. The two designs are asymmetrical, with lots of bow rocker and turn-on-a-dime maneuverability.

On the artificial course at the Riversport Adventure Park, Helbert said the Excite was a dry and fun ride that required deliberate edge control. It's for the paddler who wants to challenge themselves, he adds.

The Excite is manufactured in T-Formex and is due out in Spring 2019.
