Old Town Topwater Series PDL Kayak Alex Traynor

Old Town swept through ICAST Demo Day with their new Topwater line featuring three new models: 120, 107 and the PDL. The new boats are designed to offer a great value for a simple kayak that features Old Town’s legendary quality.

After fishing out of the Topwater 120 all summer, we were most excited to test out the pedal-powered version. Old Town shaved their reliable PDL pedal system to cut weight and draft making it a perfect fit for the smaller, shallower water. As expected, our test paddle proved the system to be powerful and ergonomic for hours of pedaling.

The Double U, tri-hull design is stable with minimal performance sacrifices. The compact kayak features a small bow hatch, well-placed gear tracks and two flush mount rod holders, but rigging is minimized to keep the boat simple and easy to use.

The Topwater PDL is 10 feet, six inches long and 36 inches wide with 450 pound capacity weighing just 76 pounds without the pedals.

A huge tankwell will hold a medium-sized cooler or any tackle storage system with room to spare. The Element Air seat is comfortable and light.

For the paddle boats, the seat has a two-stage, high-low setting. The Topwater PDL uses a sliding seat that moves fore and aft to adjust for leg length similar to the Predator PDL seat. Remove the seat and pedal system and the boats can be stacked making it easier to transport and store.

The 106 and 126 are priced less than $1000 and the PDL is just under $2000 making it one of the best quality and best value pedal kayaks on the water. To stand behind their quality, Old Town offers a four-year warrantee on the pedal system. But wait, there’s more: if you order a Topwater 106 or 126 before the end of September, the boat comes with a Humminbird Piranha fishfinder and the Topwater PDL will come with a Humminbird Helix 5 fishfinder. That’s an offer you can’t refuse.
