New Sequoia 120 offers open deck and minimal rigging for standup fishing

Hemisphere Design Works has jumped into the kayak fishing scene with serious boats and new energy for 2018. At Paddlesports Retailer On-the-Water Demo Day in Oklahoma City, we finally got to kick the tires on their flagship Evoke Sequoia 120. Prostaff Director, Pete Gelesko walked us through the boat’s features. He started with the flat deck from bow to stern. “I can lay my fly rods on the deck so they don’t snag overhangs,” he said. The frame seat has high and low position or fold it out of the way to provide a generous platform for standup fishing. Moving the seat also allows the angler to stand in the center of the boat where it is most sturdy and stable. “Some of our prostaff are removing the seat and replacing it with a cooler for more storage and an elevated standing platform,” Gelesko said.

The Sequoia 120 is a decent all-around boat but it really shines in the flat water. “I’ve been using it on our Michigan lakes and ponds,” Gelesko added. We like the large square hatches in the bow and stern making it easy to fill the boat with fishing rods, tackle and even camping gear. Removable accessory plates and flush mount rod holders allow the boat to go from the store to the water with minimal rigging. The Sequoia is a serious contender in the standup fishing kayak game with an open deck and smart rigging.
